Tredegar Band Heritage

Pioneering LEader

2016 Band Cymru Trophy

This trophy was presented to Tredegar following their success in winning the 2016 Band Cymru Competition.

The cross genre entertainment knock-out event was produced by the Rondo television company and broadcast nationally on the S4C welsh language channel over a number of weeks.

Over 40 jazz, big/swing bands, brass bands and various musical ensembles recorded preliminary programmes at various venues around Wales, which were eventually whittled down to a group of 12 semi-finalists by the panel of renowned international adjudicators;  jazz legend John Faddis, former Coldstream Guards Director of Music Graham O Jones MBE and professional trombonist Colin Sheen.

The band eventually qualified for the final at the Parc & Dare Hall in Treorchy where they were joined by City of Cardiff (Melingriffith), the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama Brass Band and Brass Beaumaris in a two-hour programme broadcast live on S4C.

Playing first, Tredegar claimed the title and the £10,000 first prize with a programme that included an arrangement by Tredegar’s tuba player Ceri John, of 'Gypsy Dance' by Dargomyzhsky, followed by Simon Dobson's 'Little Hymn', Billy May's 'Brassman's Holiday' and 'Glorifco Aeternum' by Dean Jones.

The trophy is now on display in the bandroom.

The Band Cymru Competition was first broadcast in 2014 and was won by Cory Band, with Tredegar in the final.

A 2018 competition will take place, although the rules stipulate that the defending champion will not be allowed to compete.

The aim of this Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) supported project is to provide an on-line multi-media resource that will celebrate and interpret the historical importance of the social, cultural and musical achievements of Tredegar Town Band over a time-line of the past 170 years – from the earliest reported origins in 1849 to date.
